Evolution - Winners & Losers |
What great weekend
Evolution was. Excitement, drama and plenty of interesting
developments. And as usual, I, THE INSIDER, was there to snoop
and get the quotes that you fans are not privileged to hear. But
rather than write a boring recap I, THE INSIDER, thought that
you would like to hear who my TRUE winners and losers from
Evolution are. Because as Rosie Perez said in White Men Can’t
Jump, “Sometimes when you win you really lose. And sometimes
when you lose you really win or draw.” So here we go.
WINNERS
Jimmy Payne
Well this one was a bit of a no brainier but not for the reasons
you may think. Although he has regained the EPW championship
that is not the reason that I, THE INSIDER, have listed Jimmy in
the winner’s list. With his random attacks on wrestlers through
out the weekend, Payne has re-established himself as an
unpredictable one man wrecking crew. In one weekend he attacked
(or attempted to) Chris Vice, James Street, Brock Freeman,
Havok, Anella & BobbyBadBlood. Early reports have it that
BadBlood may not return to action this year. Jimmy has all of
EPW on notice and looking over their shoulders. By getting on
the front foot he has made it known that he refuses to become a
target with the championship in his possession.
Damien Slater
This youngster has improved out of sight and put on a little
beef too. His performances against two of EPW’s finest, in Shane
Haste & FN Carnage, were phenomenal. No man of his age and
experience has taken the fight to Carnage as he did on Night 2.
Even Carnage was impressed. “Whoever he has in the semis better
look out,” Carnage said. “He is as technically sound as they
come and tough as nails. You may very well have seen the next
Invitational champion at Evolution.” High praise from a man who
tends to be stingy with compliments. The time is right for this
young man to step up and be a real force in Australian
wrestling.
Devlin Reeves
Strange choice. Maybe. The man he hired to take out Jamie Jurah
lost due to his own meddling. Reeves was then chokeslammed for
his trouble before Richter battered him from pillar to post on
Night 2. So why would I, THE INSIDER, choose him? The man pinned
Richter. Hey, you can question his methods and tactics, but, in
the end the record says that he was able to beat a man with a
massive height and weight advantage over him. Then Jamie then
forced Devlin into a first blood match at HOHW. Again, I, THE
INSIDER, think Devlin has clearly won the psychological war
here. Devlin in a man who thrives on a physical battle and tries
to break the rules as often as possible. Jamie has put him in a
position where the rules don’t apply which is playing into
Devlin’s hands. Although I’m sure he would rather not face
Jamie, Devlin now has him in an ideal position. Winners always
seem to find themselves in positions that are advantageous to
them. Funny that.
LOSERS
GST
We’ll get the obvious one out of the way first. The lost the EPW
tag team titles in record time on Night 1. On Night 2 they
rolled up ready to fight and put in a hell of a performance. But
they lost and a post match attack on BobbyBadBlood has him on
the sidelines indefinitely. Noone can take away their two EPW
tag team title reigns just as noone can doubt that this is
probably the best tag team in EPW history. But they will need to
bounce back and bounce back hard.
SHANE HASTE
Straight away let it be known that I, THE INSIDER, do not think
that Shane’s losses have anything to do with him making this
list. He had Damien Slater on the back foot before Mikey emerged
on Night 1 to cost him the match. And he took it to Mikey on
Night 2. Perhaps the only thing that Shane can be called out on
is that he doesn’t seem to have learnt anything from the
experience. When I, THE INSIDER, bumped into him after his match
he was disappointed but not upset. “Some night’s things just
don’t go your way,” the ‘Awe-Inspring’ one said. “I tried my
heart out and I appreciate all the support the fans gave me
tonight. Hopefully I’ll get him next time.” I , THE INSIDER,
think Shane is one of the nicest guys in EPW. He treats the fans
with respect and always tries to make sure they go home happy
and talking about his match. But while he has proven that nice
guys don’t always finish last, Mikey proved that guys with an
aggressive streak tend to beat nice guys and become champions.
Hopefully, Shane can find a way to balance fun and aggression as
the year goes on.
JAG
Jag is probably the single best wrestler EPW has ever seen. At
Evolution he captured the EPW tag team championships with Davis
Storm and, more importantly, looked better in the ring than
ever. He was bigger, better and badder. But in trying to further
the Forefathers cause, he made a terrible mistake that he may
live to regret. He took Anella, Havok’s valet & girlfriend, and
drilled her through a table onto the floor. Whether or not she
ever returns to EPW is debateable. But Jag can rest assured that
Havok will. Jimmy may have won this match even without Jag
taking out Anella. But that wasn’t enough for Jag. He hit Havok
with a match winning DVD on a chair before delivering an
assisted piledriver after the bell. I, THE INSIDER, could, and
will, write an entire article about Jag’s true intentions. But
the simple fact is when Havok is 100% he will be back. And he
will be pissed. And he may make Jag sorry that he ever decided
to revive their issue.
Where there you have it folks. The TRUE list of winners and
losers from Evolution. Until next time you have been reading the
thoughts of I, THE INSIDER. |
