| 28/09/06 - INSIDER's
Look at the End of Year Awards |
The EPW End of Year Awards are in their fifth year. Just
like RE-AWAKENING. For those of you who live under a rock,
the End of Year Awards are a chance for you, the fans of
EPW, to have your say into what/who you thought stood out in
EPW this year.
I, THE INSIDER, thought I’d have a brief look at all of the
categories that are up for nomination this year. But today
we will have time to only take a look at three of the
awards. And the other two will be in an upcoming column. If
you’re lucky.
ROOKIE OF THE YEAR
Now this year, the award is being fought out by three
rookies. They are Jay Taylor, Marcius Pittsonopolous & Rusty
Evans.
It is the opinion of I, THE INSIDER, that Evans shouldn’t
even be in this group. The poor bastard had to face FN
Carnage at a house show & then the EPW champion, Jimmy
Payne, at Boiling Point. He never stood a chance and should
be considered for next year’s Rookie of the Year.
Marcius Pittsonopolous has had the biggest impact of all
three rookies so far. In three short months he has faced
Shane Haste, AZ Vegara & FN Carnage and has settled into his
role in the European Union.
But I, THE INSIDER, think that Jay Taylor should be crowned
Rookie of the Year for 2006. Despite the world trying it’s
best to get poor Jay down, he has continued to try hard (no
pun intended) every time he has stepped foot in the ring. He
gets an A for effort and a vote for Rookie of the Year.
MOST IMPROVED
Well this could go a few different ways.
On one hand you could say that someone like Shane Haste or
Bobby Marshall deserve this award. Haste has stepped up to
be a legitimate player in EPW while Marshall has taken EPW
by storm since returning from an international wrestling
trip.
Or what about AZ Vegara? He has truly become the New
Sensation of Australian wrestling and despite being an
annoying prick, he is immensely talented. Chris Vice too has
stepped up to the plate in 2006.
Michael Morleone has seen success with the European Union
and on his own this year but I, THE INSIDER, hope that
another tag team wrestler picks up the award.
Chris J Lazareth. For the past three years, Lazareth was the
mouth piece while Bobby took care of the action in the ring.
Well this year, he not only held his own in tag team title
matches against the European Union & the Bad Boys of Perth
wrestling, he more than held his own while Marshall was away
in the US. Lazareth was not only the captain of the Young
Guns team at High Stakes, he also took it to Jimmy Payne in
a Street Fight for the EPW championship. A year worthy of
the Most Improved for 2006.
EVENT OF THE YEAR
Hmmmmmmm. Three events spring to mind. Evolution (Night 2
specifically), Hell or Highwater & High Stakes.
Hell Or Highwater featured two matches that would be worthy
of Match of the Year with some great action in between. AZ
Vegara & Chris Vice had an excellent bout while the First
Blood Match and the Street Fight for the EPW title stole the
show.
High Stakes was mayhem from even before the first bell. We
saw the Forefathers & Brad West take on the Young Guns of
EPW. Shane Haste & AZ Vegara was a fantastic and fast paced
match. And the impromptu main event saw Jimmy Payne, Jag &
Davis Storm hold onto their belts after facing the team of
Richter, FN Carnage & Azazal.
But (for another year) Evolution probably deserves the award
more than any other this year. The struggles between Damien
Slater & FN Carnage and Mikey & Shane Haste were top notch.
GST & Psychofett went down to Jag, Davis Storm & Nate Dooley
in a very entertaining 6 man tag match. And the main event
saw another match of the year candidate as Jimmy Payne stole
the EPW championship from Havok in an amazing Lumberjack
match.
So those are the votes of I, THE INSIDER. If you haven’t got
your vote in yet, please get it in ASAP. You can vote by
clicking here. Will those three actually be successful?
We’ll have to wait and see on November the 4th at
