14/03/07 - The Mark of a Champion

The Mark of a Champion – INSIDE THE EPW CHAMPIONSHIP

It is the return of I, THE INSIDER. Jimmy Payne’s victory over Devlin Reeves at Date with Destiny got me thinking. Who is the most dominant champion in EPW’s history? Let’s take a look at the stats.

DAVIS STORM (May 2002 – November 2002)
Storm was the very first Explosive Pro Wrestling champion, holding the belt for 175 days and defended the belt successfully on three occasions before dropping it at RE-AWAKENING 2002 to Jimmy Payne.

JIMMY PAYNE (November 2002 – July 2003)
Jimmy’s first reign lasted 252 days with only one successful defense. He spent most of this reign in a tag team with Davis Storm, chasing the EPW tag team titles and battling the Uprising. He eventually dropped the belt to FN Carnage at Hell or Highwater 2003.

FN CARNAGE (July 2003 – November 2004)
FN Carnage held the EPW championship for a massive 485 days before dropping the belt to Mikey in a three way dance at RE-AWAKENING 2004. Even more remarkable is that Carnage held the EPW tag team championships for approximately a third of this title reign. He defended the belt successfully four times with another title match being declared null and void by the EPW Board of Directors.

MIKEY NICHOLLS (November 2004 – May 2005)
Mikey’s first reign lasted 203 days with five successful title defenses being packed into that time. Mikey was also the only EPW champion to defend his belt interstate. He eventually lost the belt to Richter in highly dubious circumstances at Evolution 2005.

RICHTER (May 2005 – July 2005)
The shortest title reign in EPW history at only 49 days, he dropped the belt back to Mikey in the bloodiest match Perth wrestling has ever seen. This was his only defense of the belt.

MIKEY NICHOLLS (July 2005 – March 2006)
Mikey became the very first two time EPW champion on July 16th and managed to hold onto the belt for 245 days with only one defense being held in that time.

HAVOK (March 2006 – May 2006)
Despite the short nature of Havok’s title reign (70 days) he was the first wrestler from outside WA to hold the EPW championship. He lost the belt in his first defense against Jimmy Payne at Evolution 2006.

JIMMY PAYNE (May 2006 – Current)
At the writing of this article, Jimmy’s second reign had lasted 285 days. And with no title defense scheduled in March we can be sure that Jimmy will be only the second man to hold the belt for more than 300 days. He has already defended the belt successfully on four occasions.

So with all those facts at our disposal, who is the most dominant champion in EPW history?

FN Carnage held the belt for the longest period of time, while Mikey has defended the belt more than anyone in history.

You could draw parallels between FN Carnage’s title run and Jimmy Payne’s current reign. Carnage had the backup of the Brat Pack while Jimmy has the full strength of the Forefathers behind him. For Jimmy, he will need to see it through to RE-AWAKENING VI if he hopes to shatter the record books for the longest title reign in history.

That would make him the most dominant champion in EPW history. Is he right now? Who do I, THE INISDER. think is the most dominant champion of all time? You can throw a blanket over Mikey and Carnage for the moment but I, THE INSIDER, get the feeling that we are currently watching the most dominant champion in EPW history.
