The main event of the upcoming
Evolution
has not had awful lot of fanfare surrounding it. Although it is
a main event that EPW officials are extremely excited about. And
why shouldn’t they be. They have two of the most talented power
wrestler in all of Australia facing off for the richest prize in
their organisation The EPW championship.
Before EPW had held its first public event, Awakening, they had
their eyes on the best talent in Australian wrestling. In 2001,
there were two young wrestlers who were carving a name for
themselves all across Australia as they competed in Victoria,
New South Wales and their home state of South Australia. The
names Jag and Havok were synonymous. Whether foes or tag team
partners, they were in demand all over this country. EPW
realised that they could build a federation around two men if
they had the right two.
The history of Davis Storm and Jimmy Payne is eerily similar to
that of Jag and Havok. And that should come as no surprise to
people who know that Jag and Havok were instrumental in helping
mould Jimmy and Storm into the wrestlers that they became. Early
in their careers the two men travelled to South Australia to
train with the two men who they aspired to emulate.
But the history between these two men turned sour pretty
quickly. Jimmy wasn’t happy playing second fiddle to Havok even
in that early stage. He and Storm were the young upstarts
looking to replace their former mentors at the top of the tree.
At a Maximum Power Wrestling show in 2002, Jimmy would go one on
one with Havok. Of all things they did battle in a lumberjack
match. Payne was beaten soundly by the ‘Master of Mayhem’ and
returned to Perth to continue making a name for himself.
Havok’s first trip to Perth was a reminder to Jimmy of the fact
that he has not closed the gap on him just yet. After he and
Storm lost a tag team match to Jag and Havok, Havok drilled
Jimmy through a table with a senton. This was like an
exclamation point. Havok was still the best big man in
Australia.
To become EPW champion at Evolution Jimmy Payne will have to
overcome a lot of obstacles. In his way stands a monster who
currently holds titles in Western Australia and South Australia.
But Jimmy will also be fighting self doubt and the ghost of
wrestling past. He will face Havok in a match that he has been
soundly defeated in previously.
Can Jimmy become the second two time EPW champion in history? Or
will Havok continue his reign as the mightiest champion in
Australian wrestling today?
