RE-AWAKENING 2003. If you want to start an argument in the line
while you wait to get into a show, just tell any long time EPW
supporter that this was clearly not the biggest night in EPW
history. 9 out of 10 fans would call your bluff.
In 2003, EPW moved over the road from the Wanneroo Civic Centre
to the more spacious Margaret Cockman Pavilion. This venue would
house some of the most memorable moments that EPW has ever
produced. On this night it would house 500 screaming fans.
From start to finish, this may be the single hottest crowd that
Western Australian wrestling has ever heard. 2003’s Invitational
finals were probably the best contested finals of all time. Brad
West was able to squeeze past Jamie Jurah in the semi finals in
a tremendous match that got RE-AWAKENING 2003 off to a great
start. FN Carnage then won the 10 man Battle Royale to face Brad
in the finals.
It was the great underdog story. The EPW champion squaring off
against the perennial underdog. And what a final it was as the
fans rallied behind West. Brad was able to fight through and
score a miraculous win to become the 2003 Invitational Champion.
Devlin Reeves and Psychofett’s entrances were as unforgettable
as their actual Softcore Match. Devlin entered with Super Team
Devlin in tow, to the sounds of Eye of the Tiger. The sound of
500 fans chanting STD was one of the most bizarre things to ever
happen at an EPW show.
Psychofett would not be outdone and entered with the beautiful
Dynamite Dolls by his side. He then broke out into a dance
routine that would have made John Travolta jealous. Then they
had a match that involved a tiny stepladder, an inflatable
helmet, a giant Pooh Bear & a toilet seat. Try topping that.
Then finally the match that everyone had waited two years for.
The Uprising versus Team EPW for all the marbles. If Team EPW
won, they would reassume control of EPW, if the Uprising won,
Davis Storm would have to join them.
This was the most incredible spectacle that we have ever seen in
EPW. For over 40 minutes, six men beat each other up and down
the Cockman Pavilion with no regard for each others safety.
These are but three of the moments
that will have stayed with everyone who was there on that night.
This two year feud came to a head in the most hardcore battle
that EPW had seen to that point and the fans exploded with
excitement at the conclusion of this bout. I can not put into
words what that night was like as I’m sure anyone who was there
would feel the same.
If that was the spirit of RE-AWAKENING there that night, we can
all only hope that it graces us with its presence once again in
2006 because November 15th 2003 was one of the highlights of my
life.
