01/11/06 - Re-Awakening History Vol III

History of RE-AWAKENING

If you could sum up Re-Awakening 2004 in one word, it would have to be emotional. 2004 saw us once again return to the Wanneroo Showgrounds with the place jam packed with fans once again.

The Invitational trophy went home with Richter as he managed to barely survive Victoria’s Spike Steele before defeating Psychofett in the final match. Richter redefined what a wrestler would do to attain the Invitational trophy as he broke Steele’s wrist to abruptly end what had been a tremendous match.

The tag team titles were decided in what may be the most sensational tag match ever held in EPW / Re-Awakening history. A four team- tag team tables match was a first in EPW and it did not disappoint. The Brat Pack, GST and Awsome Inc took it to the champions, the Serial Thrillers, in a match that resembled a car wreck. In the end it took a dodgy referee for GST to outlast the Thrillers and win their first EPW tag team championships.

The Loser Leaves EPW stipulation attached to the Vagrant’s match with Slick Rick Sanders ensured that Perth wrestling was about to lose one of it’s biggest characters. The longtime manager of the Brat Pack made a sensational entrance as the star of Mission Impossible II. But the Natrix was not to be outdone as Dooley arrived looking like Keanu Reeves. Ok maybe Keanu living in a trash can.

Although outclassed at the beginning, Slick started to get rolling with Devlin Reeves in his corner. But his usual underhanded tactics brought him undone and he ended up being Kryptonite Krunched right out of EPW. Although they had been long time adversaries, Dooley shook the hand of Slick Rick before leaving him the chance to say goodbye to the fans.

That left only the main event. The EPW champion, FN Carnage, put his belt up against the former champion, Davis Storm, & the ‘Rising Star’ Mikey. This match saw the ascension of a true superstar as Mikey overcame two of the best wrestlers that EPW has ever seen. The reaction when the referee counts to three is simply mind blowing. The fans had waited a long time to see Mikey take the last step to glory and were overwhelmed when that moment arrived.

But with all due respect, the night belonged to Slick Rick. As he received a standing ovation at night’s end, the original Explosive Coastal Wrestlers all poured from the back to say goodbye. A video package was played with people paying their respect to Rick, before the rest of the wrestlers put their differences aside and all returned to the ringside area.

EPW has never seen a moment like this before and probably never will again. There was no one figure who was more respected by all in EPW than Slick Rick Sanders. And RE-AWAKENING 2004 was and forever should be remembered as his night.!
