The
wrestling 'off-season' has been one of the most historic ever
seen by Explosive Pro Wrestling. We have seen the introduction
of a weekly wrestling show on Channel 31 and the announcement of
Road Shows reaching out to various parts of Perth.
However, it's now time to
focus on what could be the most action-packed wrestling show of
2008 – and, incredibly, we're only just in February.
Ordinarily this would be a big call, but when you have both the
NWA Australian title and EPW title defended at the one event,
you can understand why!
Mikey Nicholls is widely regarded by both fans and wrestlers as
the most successful EPW commodity of all time. Having been with
the company since day dot, he is a multiple winner of 'Wrestler
of the Year', while also capturing EPW's greatest prize on more
than one occasion. After a career that has amazed wrestling fans
all over the country, Mikey set his sights on establishing a
pro-wrestling career in the United States; a move that would pay
off handsomely when he tasted gold in the EWF in America.

But while Mikey Nicholls was forging a career overseas, an
arch-nemesis was adding to his own impressive legacy on home
soil.
Jimmy Payne turned in the most dominant year that any EPW
wrestler, let alone Champion, has ever achieved in 2007. Having
defended the coveted title in a bloodthirsty war with Devlin
Reeves, Payne claimed yet another 'Match of the Year' gong for
his knockdown, drag out ladder match with Bobby Marshall at
Evolution. The dominant streak continued and claimed nearly
everyone on EPW roster until that fateful day when Shane Haste
did the unthinkable and beat Payne for the EPW title inside a
Steel Cage.
In
what could easily be a Re-Awakening main event, Mikey Nicholls
defends his NWA Australian title against Jimmy Payne at Gold
Rush. Nicholls is fresh off a stirring title defence in EPW
Adelaide against Damian Slater and may just have all the
momentum rolling into this huge matchup. But if 2007 has taught
us anything, it's not to write off the biggest, baddest bully in
the West - Jimmy Payne.
Payne has proven all through out 2008 that he is at his best
when his back is against the wall and nobody thinks he can win.
He has beaten Mikey in the past, including during Mikey’s
incredible reign as EPW champion.
Jimmy has already shown that he can win, even when Nicholls was
at his best. This Saturday, Mikey will need to prove the same if
he hopes to hang onto the NWA Australian Championship.
