10/09/09 - EPW End of Year Awards Overview

WA vs VIC

It’s that time of year again, where we turn the vote over to you, the EPW faithful, to determine the End of Year Awards. Voting will open this Saturday at WA vs VIC. Make sure you’re voice is heard by getting your vote in for your favourite moments and wrestlers of 2009.

In order to help you make a decision, let’s take a brief look at each category.

ROOKIE OF THE YEAR
GARRY SCHMIDT / GAVIN MCGAVIN / ADAM BANKS

Schmidt would have to be odds on favourite. Win, lose or draw, Garry always makes sure he is the focus of everyone’s attention. Banks has started like a house on fire but his knee injury could see this become a two horse race. McGavin has been solid since joining forces with Ferguson Block but has failed to make a huge impact thus far.

MOST IMPROVED
(ALL WRESTLERS WHO AREN’T ON THE ROOKIE LIST ARE ELIGIBLE)

There have been some strong improvements within the EPW ranks in 2009. Richter’s improvement has been steady as he has gone from resident underachiever to EPW champion. You could throw a blanket over Dan Moore, Chase Griffin and Alex Kingston whose four match series earlier this year highlighted the potential of all three young men. Sebastian Sander has also stepped up, taking former EPW champion, Davis Storm, to one of his toughest matches in the past 12 months.

EVENT OF THE YEAR
Everyone has their favourite event for different reasons but for this writer, Hell or Highwater has been the stand out event of 2009. Storm, Haste and Slater blending their technical and aerial prowess into a fantastic three way battle, the return of Tyler Jacobs from injury and two hard hitting matches as Michael Morleone defeated Jose Del Santo in an I QUIT MATCH and Bobby Marshall and Richter tore the Venville Rec Centre apart in a controversial EPW championship match.

MATCH OF THE YEAR
There are plenty of matches to choose from this year. Let’s take a quick overview at some of my personal favourites.

  • GREAT AUSSIE BASH
Davis Storm and Richter v the European Union.

  • AFTERSHOCK
    Bobby Marshall v JT

  • GOLDRUSH II
Blitz Team v Dan Moore and Chase Griffin - EPW Tag Team Championship Match

  • BATTLE FOR SUPREMACY
    Shane Haste v Slex

  • EVOLUTION 2009 NIGHT 1
Jamie Jurah v Richter - EPW Championship Match
Blitz Team v Moore / Griffin – Tag Team Tables Match

  • EVOLUTION 2009 NIGHT 2
Bobby Marshall v KrackerJack - Hardcore Match
Richter v Davis Storm v JT – EPW Championship Match

  • HELL OR HIGHWATER
Jose Del Santo v Michael Morleone – I Quit Match
Damian Slater v Shane Haste v Davis Storm – Invitational Qualifier
Bobby Marshall v Richter – EPW Championship Match

  • BREAKING POINT
Bobby Marshall v Jamie Jurah - #1 Contenders Match
Davis Storm v Sebastian Sander – Invitational Qualifier

WRESTLER OF THE YEAR
If you take a look at the names that feature most heavily in Match of the Year contention, you tend to find yourself the favourites for Wrestler of the Year. On that basis, let’s call it a four horse race with a few dark outsiders. Richter has become the dominant figure that he has always threatened to become, and an EPW champion in the process. Davis Storm would have to be the most consistent figure in EPW’s eight years and has had another wonderful year despite losing the gold to Bobby Marshall. Marshall bounced back from a horrow start to the year to record strong victories over some extremely tough adversaries in some tremendous matches. Shane Haste helped elevate the entire tag team division before stepping back into singles action against the likes of Davis Storm and Damian Slater. Our two dark horses would be Damian Slater and JT. Both have had their best years in EPW thus far and have been racking up win after win in some great matches.

So there you have it people. Make sure you’re at WA vs VIC this weekend to get your vote in nice and early. We’ll see you there!.
