“Keep your mouth shut and your
eyes open.”
Along with my formative training, Col Dervaney also instilled an
attitude in me. Keep your mouth shut and your eyes open was his
way of saying that no good can come from running your mouth in
professional wrestling. No matter what you achieve, someone will
want to tear you down and you can’t spend all your time trying
to answer faceless critics.
Over the past seven and a half years, EPW has built a reputation
that has been forged by our uncompromising attitude to strive
for excellence. This has led to us being labelled arrogant.
Elitist. Conceited. Our fans have been ostracised on
mesageboards for their support of EPW. They were labelled one
eyed and ignorant.
It has been tough to remain quiet through out all the public
provocation but I have remained true to the principles taught to
me by my trainer. We tried to keep our heads out of battles that
didn’t matter to us and try and focus on putting on the best
shows possible for the people whose opinions actually matter.
Our fans.
But in April, that faceless critic showed up in our house and
slapped us in the face. Slex came from Melbourne to tell us and
our fans exactly what Australian wrestling, specifically
Melbourne wrestling, thought of us. We were the arrogant
outcasts of Australian wrestling.
It was a tough pill to swallow without any real retribution but
I figured we’d seen the last of him when we chased him out of
the building that night.
The sight of him and Carlo holding up the EPW tag team
championships at Evolution made me sick to my stomach. What
Carlo did last week was unforgivable. He spat on our EPW tag
team title as he and all of his buddies in Melbourne got a cheap
laugh in at our expense.
As you may have seen already, I’m not laughing.
THIS IS MY CALL TO ARMS.
I am calling on all EPW fans to help us create the most
unwelcoming environment possible on Saturday night. Calling the
EPW faithful the most passionate fans in this country is not a
catch phrase and I hope you all turn up in full voice on
Saturday to show these two Victorians that they have crossed the
line. Jimmy and I will stand on the front line but I want Carlo
and Slex to realise that they are facing an army. The chants
from you fans will leave no doubt to these men that they are in
EPW country.
Together we will win bring the tag team titles back where they
truly belong.
