The Invitational Tournament has
always been synonymous with success here in Explosive Pro
Wrestling. Since day one, the Tournament has acted as a
springboard to the top for all who have won it. It is the
longest running tournament in Australian wrestling history and
has seen the best from all over the country, come to Perth to
try and take home the trophy.
This year, Explosive Pro Wrestling officials put together what
they called, ‘the toughest Invitational Tournament of all time.’
The list of participants included three former EPW champions,
five former EPW tag team champions and three winners of the
Invitational Tournament.
After Hell or
Highwater, we are now down to six finalists. These six men
will face each other in three singles matches at
BREAKING POINT
with the three winners going on to RE-AWAKENING to clash in the
final.
Today, we’ll take a look at two of the semi finalists and their
chances of going all the way in the Invitational Tournament in
2009.
DAN MOORE
2009 has seen Dan Moore and his tag team partner, Chase Griffin,
take great strides in their development as wrestlers. Despite
losing all four matches in their series with the Blitz Team,
their performances in those matches showed that they were more
than ready to stand toe to toe with the best in EPW.
Favoured Opponent in the Next Round: Dan Moore is definitely the
biggest underdog remaining in the tournament. His forte has been
tag team wrestling and he hasn’t been involved in a major
singles match in almost two years. However, that match saw him
pin Jamie Jurah in a loser leaves EPW match. Moore has the
ability to cause a major upset if he can frustrate an opponent
in the way he did Jurah. With that thought in mind, it is more
likely that a less experienced opponent would be prone to making
that mistake. Dan’s best chance of making the finals would be to
come up against either Jay Taylor or Sebastian Sander.
DAMIAN SLATER
The self proclaimed ‘Golden Boy’ has been extremely impressive
over the past 12 months. He has enjoyed some big wins over some
big names including two former EPW champions in Davis Storm and
Shane Haste. He also suffered a major setback when he lost the
Invitational Final at RE-AWAKENING 7 after being on the verge of
a career defining victory. That loss is still firmly in the
front of Slater’s mind and it will take a top wrestler at the
top of his game to stop this young man from taking home the
trophy this year.
Favoured Opponent in the Next Round: Slater is still the odds on
favourite to take out the Invitational Tournament this year.
However, overconfidence may still be his undoing. To deal with
this, Slater is best suited to facing someone who he may feel he
has a point to prove to. His loss to Jay Taylor last November
still ranks as his biggest career disappointment and he would be
focused and fired up if the two were to face off at BREAKING
POINT.
