Since the very first RE-AWAKENING, the show has been renowned for bringing the very best out of the very best in Australian wrestling. And that statement is never more appropriate than when talking about Jimmy Payne. The former EPW champion has stood tallest when the lights have been at their very brightest.

This year, RE-AWAKENING celebrates its eighth anniversary and in that time Jimmy Payne has never been defeated at the biggest show of the year. EVER. This year he faces a determined challenge from a young and hungry AZ Vegara.

In 2009, Vegara hit the ground running and with Amber and Damian Slater by his side, it appeared the ‘New Sensation’ was headed for the biggest year of his career. Then it all went horribly wrong. As his losses started to mount, Slater and Amber chose to distance themselves from their former team mate. Vegara plans to win them back by doing something that has never been done before. Defeat Jimmy Payne at RE-AWAKENING.

Although Vegara has the talent, let’s take a look at the men who have tried and failed at this task in the past.

RE-AWAKENING I – Jimmy Payne defeats Davis Storm – EPW Championship Match - 2 out of 3 Falls Match
The two most popular wrestlers in EPW wrestle a back and forth epic which sees Jimmy claim his first EPW championship.

RE-AWAKENING II – Jimmy Payne, Nate Dooley & Davis Storm defeat the Uprising – 6 Man Street Fight.
Jimmy teams up with his two best friends to win one of the most famous matches in EPW history.

RE-AWAKENING III – Jimmy is forced to sit out Re-Awakening after a year long injury leaves him unable to participate.

RE-AWAKENING IV – Jimmy Payne defeats Ferguson Block
A dominant display from the man who would go on to reclaim the EPW championship the following year.

RE-AWAKENING V – Jimmy Payne defeats Bobby Marshall – EPW Championship Match
An amazing match of non stop action as both men throw absolutely everything at each other in an attempt to leave Re-Awakening with the gold. Nate Dooley would play the decisive hand that helped Jimmy walk out as the champion.

RE-AWAKENING VI – Jimmy Payne defeats Davis Storm – 2 out of 3 Falls Match
These two long-time rivals battle it out in another 2 out of 3 falls classic. Either man could have won on points but Jimmy takes the win after Nate Dooley causes the decisive distraction.

RE-AWAKENING VII – Jimmy did not compete due to retirement.

Five wins at five Re-Awakenings over some of the biggest names in EPW history. While outside interference may have played a hand in several of those wins, the fact is Jimmy finds a way to win at RE-AWAKENING.

AZ Vegara wants to create history on November 7th at the Craigie Leisure Centre. But if he isn’t careful, he might just become a part of it instead.
