This is the second of a seven part series, designed to look at
the seven unresolved issues remaining from 2009.
Today we will be taking a look at the fall of AZ Vegara
and how he managed to pick himself up off the mat towards the
close of last year.
2009 started off brightly for AZ Vegara. Alongside his mentor
Bobby Marshall, stable mate Damian Slater and their
valet, Amber, he was able to string several wins together
and seemed to finally be breaking through in the fashion that he
had been expected to for years.
But a devastating loss at
Goldrush II
to his former teammate, Jay Taylor, saw AZ fall rapidly
down the EPW rankings as he suffered a horrendous run of losses.
Together with Slater and Amber, he had a falling out with Bobby
Marshall, who had guided him through out the previous 12 months.
It seemed as if Vegara was simply unable to get it done with
Marshall no longer by his side.
Just when it seemed like things couldn’t get any worse for AZ,
he hit rock bottom. Slater and Amber confronted him about his
inexplicable loss of form. They told him that he would need a
win to retain his place in their stable. Consecutive losses to
Jimmy Payne and Ferguson Block saw him out on his
own without a friend in the world.
Rather than crush Vegara, his expulsion has served to focus him.
He was determined to win back his best friend and female
companion by proving himself anyway he could. AZ blamed Jimmy
Payne for his misfortune and set himself on snapping Jimmy’s
undefeated streak at
Re-Awakening 8.
Although it took a cane shot from Nate Dooley for him to
score the win, Vegara looked better than ever in bringing Jimmy
down at Re-Awakening 8.
Vegara followed this up by winning a four elimination match that
featured JT, Tyler Jacobs and Chase Griffin.
He seems to have found the confidence that he lacked for so many
months in 2009.
But the one thing he still hasn’t found, is a way to win back
Amber and Slater. Despite his best efforts, they have continued
to insist that he simply isn’t good enough to be associated with
the self proclaimed ‘Golden Couple’ of Explosive Pro
Wrestling.
Will 2010 see the ‘New Sensation’ finally arrive in EPW?
And if he can, will that prove to Damian Slater and Amber that
he is ‘worthy’ of his spot within their stable? Or will his
obsession simply result in him taking his eyes off the real
prize yet again?
Only time will tell.
