26/05/10 - Tag Team
Gold on the Line at EVOLUTION 2010
Last month it was said that whoever won the match between
Shane Haste and AZ Vegara at Goldrush III,
would carry all the momentum into their upcoming tag team title
match this Saturday, at Evolution Night
2. Perhaps it was no surprise then that it was Vegara
who had his hand raised in victory, because for the last 6
months, ‘momentum’ has been his middle name.
Vegara has been on an incredible hot streak notching up wins
over former EPW Champions Jimmy Payne and of course now
current Tag Champion Shane Haste. It should also be no surprise
that Vegara’s valet Amber was involved in the decision
last month, distracting the ref just long enough for AZ to get
the job done, but the importance of that win can not be
understated.
Amber’s return was courtesy of Vegara’s other big win recently,
taking out an over the top battle royal and winning himself the
number one contendership for the EPW Tag team titles. It was
then that Amber and Damian Slater slithered their way
back to Vegara after unceremoniously dumping him earlier.
While it is obvious to everyone that Vegara is simply being
used, he is either unaware, or simply doesn’t care. After all,
the result is that he has a main even match at Evolution Night 2
for the tag team Championships, and one of this country’s most
impressive grapplers in his corner. Damian Slater is the self
proclaimed ‘Golden Boy’ of Australian wrestling, and it’s hard
to argue. He is one of the most in demand talents of his
generation and he has wrestled, and won, all over the world.
Slater and AZ pose a threat to any team they step in the ring
with. Both men are the dangerous combination of youth, hunger
and talent, and they have a willingness to do all that is
necessary to win. With their valet Amber, equal parts beauty and
venom, in their corner Slater and Vegara walk into
EVOLUTION
with the numbers game on their side.
However, they are coming up against a duo that proves that a
team of champions can indeed make a champion team. Between
Mikey Nicholls and Shane Haste they have held the
EPW Championship and the Tag Team Championships on
numerous occasions, as well as the Invitational Tournament
Trophy, and the NWA Australian title. They are
possibly the most decorated tag team in EPW’s history and with
their size and strength, they are certainly one of the most
intimidating.
On paper this promises to be a match of the year candidate, with
the immense talent of four of EPW’s finest on display. Can Mikey
Nicholls and Shane Shane continue to defend the titles that they
have worn proudly for over 6 months, or will the new and
improved ‘New Sensation’ AZ Vegara, and ‘The Golden Boy’ Damian
Slater complete their journey from future stars, to champions?
